Connecticut College Dorm

Consisting of three separate 4-story buildings, the project rested under the shade of existing pine trees, on the northeast residential side of campus. The rotated configuration of buildings closed off the site from the rest of campus, allowing residents to feel a sense of space and community.

Layers— each floor plan decreases in square footage to allow for ample light and perspectives. The layered configurations continued into surrounding site, allowing hardscape to respond to the built design in the form of sidewalks and amphitheater steps dug into the topography.

The proposed materials for the facade of this design was inspired by the Type/Variant House by VJAA located in Northern Wisconsin, consisting of wood-famed & copper-clad volumes. As a reciprocation to the site response of the built design, these muted, natural materials allowed for a settlement of the dorms into the surrounding natural environment.
